Bereavement and Loss Counseling
A Place of Hope and Caring

Many people report that, while deep in grief, they have been visited by red birds. The red bird, they tell us, provided comfort and a connection to the loved one they had lost. According to a sacred Cherokee story, the sun's daughter was killed, but returned to her mother in the form of a red bird.

CURRENT GRIEF GROUP OFFERINGS

Each group will meet for an hour and a half and group size will be limited. Groups will be semi-structured so that there is time for participants to learn about the bereavement process as well as share their feelings. A professional qualified in the field of grief counseling will lead all groups.

The Loss of a Spouse: Freedom to Grieve; Learning to Grow

We search for the person who can make our lives feel complete. We share joys and disappointments together as we create our families. Then with the death of our partner we are expected to cope alone. This group will give those who have experienced the loss of a spouse an opportunity to share their feelings in a safe environment. These are some of the questions to be addressed: How to forge new relationships with family and friends? What are some of the most difficult new steps a "single again" person has to take? Where can new sources of emotional support be found?

Parents Who Have Lost Adult Children
The death of a child at any age goes against nature. As one parent expressed, "It's so wrong, so absurdly wrong, for a parent to bury his child." This small group experience gives parents an opportunity to voice their pain and to share the intensity of their feelings with those who understand.

"Sharing Helps" Young Adults Who Have Lost Family Members

We are never really ready to lose our parents. We all want to have our parents approval and caring even when we are adults. However, losing a parent as a young adult in our twenties or thirties still feels especially difficult and painful. Losing a sibling is especially traumatic as young people realize they will not have the opportunity to share their adulthood with their brother or sister. This group will help members to express their pain and begin the process of effectively parenting themselves.

Embracing Life After The Suicide of a Loved One
One of the most difficult losses is a loved one's choice to end his/her life. This group will lead survivors through the tasks of mourning and will provide survivors the opportunity to meet others who know the pain of this type of traumatic death.

Infant Loss
The loss of an infant is one of life's unspeakable losses. Family and friends do not know what to say or how to comfort you. Come and share with others who understand your pain. The group will give you support and help you to find strength and solace as you begin the healing process.
